Renon
You could refer to it as a 'bump', the mountain on which the village of Soprabolzano is located. We prefer to call it the sun plateau, as the sun shines in Parkhotel Holzner 300 days a year. The Renon has been a well-liked region for many centuries: the Kaiserweg path led candidates for the crown over the Renon plateau on their way to be crowned by the Pope.
From an early date, the Renon basin was also the place where the Bolzano elite escaped the heat of the summer months, making the Renon a traditional location for 'summertime refreshment'. Since those days, of course, certain things have changed. Back when the rack-and-pinion railway and the Holzner (originally named 'Hotel Oberbozen') were being built, the poet Heinrich von Hoffmansthal expressed his fears of the onset of mass tourism in his text 'Abschied von Oberbozen' (Farewell to Soprabolzano). This railway has since blossomed into one of Europe's most modern examples of public transport. The poet's fears of mass tourism have, gladly, proved to be unfounded.
Today, the new Renon cable car connects the Renon with the state capital of Bolzano at four-minute intervals. Up on the plateau, the narrow gauge railway still chugs along from place to place, sometimes in its old garb, but mostly in new. On the Rittner Horn, the Rittner Horn cable car floats up to the summit surrounded by a breath-taking panorama. People say that you can see all the way to Venice on clear days. The Rittner Horn is a wonderful area for walking, and a perfect skiing destination for families in the winter. A number of small museums supply cultural stimulation, and countless walking routes provide an opportunity for physical activity, as do the wide range of sports facilities.
