Holzner vinotheque
At the Holzner vinotheque the focus is on South Tyrol wines. And this is no coincidence. South Tyrol is not only an autonomous political area; it is also a wine-growing region. The diverse soil conditions and the differences in climate from one place to the next result in an extraordinary range of wines, including the three indigenous wine types of Vernatsch, Lagrein and Gewürztraminer.
Numerous crises in the past century and the mass production that continued into the 1980s have made the whole of South Tyrol reassess its approach to wine growing. Today, 25 DOC grape varieties are grown on roughly 5,000 hectares (12,350 acres). 16 winery cooperatives, 25 private wineries and roughly 100 winegrowers press 320,000 hectolitres (8.45m gallons) of wine every year.
In 2010, the Gambero Rosso magazine gave a total of 24 South Tyrol wines their ‘three glasses’ rating (classifying them as 'extraordinary wines'). To compare: more than 60 wines from Tuscany, Italy's ultimate wine-growing region, were given the same rating. There, however, around 60m hL (1,585m gallons) of wine are pressed every year from a land area of 63,500 ha (2.2m acres). This is almost 13 times more than in South Tyrol, yet only 3 times as many wines were given the same rating as those from South Tyrol.
